The standard issue heavy machine gun of the Red Army, the DShK was based on the DK model introducted in 1934 as a infantry anti-aircraft weapon. The DShK was modified for a dual role against ground troops, mounted on a two-wheel chassis that could be opened to form a tripod for anti-aircraft use.
