Based on the same Mauser design that had equipped German infantry since the turn of the century, the Kar-98k rifle remained standard issue for German armed forces for the entirety of the war, with over 14 million rifles produced. The Mauser rifle was extremely popular among armed forces around the world, and the Kar-98k came into widespread use among the partisans of occupied Europe as ammunition was readily available by stealing it off the Germans.
