While the Germans and Soviets developed tanks with heavier armor as the war progressed, the Americans continued to rely on the M4 Sherman medium tank and eschewed heavy tanks in favor of tank destroyers. These tank destroyers utilized light armor with a powerful high-velocity gun, sacrificing armor for speed and mobility. While not as successful as the heavily-armored tanks of the Germans and the Soviets, the tank destroyers were easier to transport, an important consideration with a cross-channel invasion. With 7000 produced between September and December 1942, the M10 Tank Destroyer was soon made obsolete by stronger Tiger and Panther tanks. Nevertheless, the need for tank destroyers to support the easily-killed M4 Shermans kept the M10 in service throughout the war. |
