The primary battle tank of the Italian Armored Corps during the North African campaign, the M13/40 replaced the inadequate M11/39 and first entered battle in December 1940. Although undergunned, the M13/40 was the equal of British cruiser tanks during the early years of the war, but by late 1942 was obviously outclassed.
