The Browning M-1917 had been adopted by the US Army for use during the First World War, but was not available before the war ended. With minor modifications, the M-1917A1 had been introduced in 1936. The machine gun was simple to produce and use, but could vibrate significantly under sustained fire, marring its accuracy. It was used throughout the war as a fixed defense weapon.
