The primary light tank for American forces, the M3 was used extensively for reconnaisance and as a cruiser tank by the British, who named the tank "Stuart". The M3 Stuart was similar to the original American model, but the sponsoon machine guns were removed. The M3 tank entered production in March 1941, and by August was in the field with the British in North Africa. In 1943, the M3 was replaced by the M5A1 Stuart, which was similar in most respects except for increased armor. The M5A1 was to be replaced by the M24 Chaffee, but the Chaffee didn't enter service until 1945.
