Like the MG34 machine gun it replaced as the standard issue machine gun for German troops, the MG42 was a general-purpose weapon in that it could be used by one man as a light machine gun, or mounted on a tripod as a medium or anti-aircraft machine gun. Whereas the MG34 was expensive to produce and could be tempermental under severe conditions, the MG42 was more battle-worthy and designed for mass production. It was known for its truly frightening rate of fire, with as much as 20 rounds fired each second.
