The Type 14 was an improved version of the 4th Year Type A pistol designed by Kirijo Nambu in 1915. Though Japanese officers were required to purchase their own sidearms, the most common model used within the Imperial Army and Navy were Nambu automatics, despite the fact that they were poorly designed. Many Japanese officers were killed when dirt accumulated in the magazine making it impossible to remove and reload the emptied weapon.
