Designed as an answer to the T-34 menace, the Panzerkampfwagen V or "Panther" tank did not appear till the Battle of Kursk in mid-1943, where several broke down due to mechanical failure. These problems were quickly worked out, and the Panther became one of the best tanks of the war. Fast, reliable, well-armored, and powerful, the Panther went on to comprise half the tank strength of the German Army in 1945 (alongside the ubiquitous PzkwIV). |
