Germany built its first armored cars off their 6x4 truck chassis, resulting in the SdKfz 231. These original six-wheeled armored cars were used in Poland and France, but were quickly withdrawn for training and police duties. They were replaced by the SdKfz 231 (8-rad) armored car, which had 8 wheels for better cross-country performance. This vehicle remained the primary armored car of German armed forces throughout the war, used for reconnaisance, communications, command, and internal security missions. |
