The Semovente M40 was an assault gun, an armored self-propelled gun built on a turretless tank chassis. Assault guns were built to fufill the same role tanks had during the First World War, to support infantry attacks by making breakthroughs in enemy lines. However, assault guns were also easier to produce than tanks as they were often built on existing tank chassis, so they were used to supplement regular tanks in both close support and armored combat.
Produced between 1941 and 1942, the most prevalent model of the Semovente M40 in the Italian arsenal was fitted with the da75/18 gun. This model was useful in North Africa but proved completely inadequate on the Eastern Front.
