Built off the Panzerkampfwagen III tank chassis, the Sturmgeschütz III was the primary assault gun of German armed forces. First used in 1940 during the campaign in France, there were several different versions of the StgIII and many more different kinds of assault guns issued to the Wermacht and Waffen-SS. With nearly 8000 produced between December 1942 and the end of the war, the StgIII Ausf G was the most popular model, and saw service both with infantry units in its close-support role and with panzer units where it supplemented the tanks in their role of armored combat.
