The Winchester M12 was prevalent among the many different types of pump-action shotguns issued by the US Armed Forces for police and security details. The similar Model 1897 had been used in combat by the American Expeditionary Force during the First World War, and both the Model 1897 and the M12 were fitted with the M1917 bayonet and issued in small numbers as "trench guns" to field troops.
